Bringing a sense of fun and magic for residents this Easter.
The staff at Birchwood House held a quirky ‘Alice in Wonderland’ themed Mad Hatter’s Tea Party for the residents of our Speldhurst care home, to bring a sense of fun and magic to all this Easter.
Following on from the success of the Winter Wonderland-themed Christmas party, the event was carefully planned for the residents as a complete surprise. The tea party was held on 31st March 2021.
Amazing décor and costumes
Thanks to our talented staff, the dining room of our care home was transformed into a magical and majestic wonderland. Combining amazing décor with eccentric character costumes, each member of the team worked to produce an experience that mesmerized our residents.
All our staff re-created some of the most fantastical and quirky scenes from Alice in Wonderland. Details such as an enchanted forest themed backdrop, Alice herself sipping tea with the residents along with a life-size Cheshire Cat and bright and vibrant colours featured. Everyone really got behind the story and gave it their all.
Indulgent cakes
Food was themed around the story with ‘Eat Me, Drink Me’ labels displayed on each item. There was a full spread for all to indulge in, including jam tarts, cheese straws, finger sandwiches and sausage rolls, as well as a fabulous centrepiece cake. The food went down extremely well with all our guests and was planned and baked by our very own chef Anne.
All our Birchwood team took every step to make sure our residents felt like they had stepped into a magical wonderland, ensuring to bring these captivating scenes to life with little details such as their very own Queen of Hearts.
Claire Tye, our Deputy Manager at Birchwood House, adds, “Here at Birchwood House, we always like to go above and beyond to make sure the residents smile. After what can only be described as the strangest most challenging year for us all, we wanted to create a scene of magic and joy to lift the spirits of all. By theming our Easter event around the all-time classic that is Alice in Wonderland, we have been able to create magic and couldn’t wait to surprise the residents!”
What next?
We can’t wait to plan more events at Birchwood this year and have already started planning the next one. Our events have become an important morale-boosting initiative for residents and staff alike and give us the chance to all come together and show our creativity.

We all know what it’s like to feel stressed, and we all have certain triggers. Whether it’s a deadline at work, a missed flight, or a new social situation, stress is a natural part of life. But as we get older, these stress triggers can change. Our health, and the health of our loved ones, becomes a more prominent source of stress, especially as this is something out of our control. On top of that, there’s the possible move into a care home, which can be a hard transition to navigate. January is National Hot Tea Month, and there is nothing better than a good cup of tea. It’s one of life’s small pleasures, and it’s a daily routine for many, including for us at Birchwood House! Tea is also rooted in long-standing tradition and cultural significance. Legend says that tea was discovered by Emperor Shen Nung all the way back in 2732 BC, when leaves from a wild tree accidentally blew into his pot of boiling water. Tea came to Europe in the early 1600s, and we’ve been drinking it ever since. To celebrate National Hot Tea Month, here are some of our favourite reasons why we drink it! - Vegetarian Suet Roulade
New year, new recipes! This month, Chef John aced his homemade vegetarian suet roulade. This is the perfect hearty winter meal, with roasted veg packed with soft suet pastry. We’ve paired this with mash, braised cabbage and vegetarian gravy, but it also goes great with a cheese sauce. - Christmas crafts
Merry Christmas! This month is filled with festive fun for our residents, which means all sorts of Christmas crafts to get involved with. When we get older, finding ways to move our body can get harder. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible! Using low-impact, gentle exercise is a great way to stay active without putting too much strain on ourselves. Regular movement is important for a number of reasons, not to mention the physical and mental health benefits. A recent report by Care England even showed that regular physical activity is improving the health, confidence, and wellbeing of residents in care homes, and could even deliver savings of up to £96 million to the NHS. - Mediterranean Roasted Chicken Breasts
This is a dish packed with flavour and spice. The chicken is filled with amino acids to support muscle growth and brain function, whilst the vegetables are rich in fibre and antioxidants. Both warming and filling, we’ve taken inspiration from The Cafe Sucre Farine to make this healthy, easy dinner. - How did our residents celebrate National Baking Week?
