Care reviews: how your voice makes a difference

Care reviews: how your voice makes a difference

High-quality care is so much more than meeting basic needs. We want our residents to feel safe, valued, and fully supported in their day to day lives. That’s why care reviews are so important. Having a voice is empowering, and we aim to ensure that all residents and their families feel comfortable advocating for their needs. We know that each resident has a unique care journey, and we’re always looking to hear about their individual experiences.

This means hearing the good, the bad, and the ugly! We’re always looking for ways to improve, and our commitment to honest reviews keeps us at the top of our game.

But why are reviews so important? And as a resident or family member, how can your voice make a difference?

Feedback creates tailored, person-centred care

Autonomy is so important for an enriching, fulfilling life. When residents share their needs, express their opinions, and voice their concerns, we can place their decisions at the forefront.

This includes understanding each resident’s experiences and perspectives. By encouraging open conversations, we can understand their favourite pastimes as well as activities they’d rather not do again. We can also learn what makes a person thrive, whether this is group sessions or solo time.

We encourage residents to use their voice in reminiscence therapy, allowing their memories to shine through and help provide comfort, stability and joy.

Whilst we always want to promote wellbeing, we never want to compromise independence, and it’s our residents who help us do that. By listening to each individual’s need, we can build relationships based on trust and reassurance, both for residents and their loved ones.

Care of the highest quality

When residents speak up, we can ensure we’re doing everything we can to deliver high-quality care. This can show us areas for improvement, but it can also inspire new ways of working and adapting routines. This could look like an updated activity programme, a change in decor for a communal space, or a new recipe for Chef John to try.

Feedback is also essential for preventing and stopping concerns before they escalate into wider issues. At Birchwood House, we provide ample opportunity for residents to have their say, both in surveys and day-to-day interactions. In our last Quality Assurance Questionnaire, we were so pleased to see our residents felt both physically and emotionally supported. One resident had particular praise for Lizzie, our Lifestyle Lead, saying:

“By her expertise and interpersonal skills she has succeeded in converting me from an apprehensive, immobile old bloke into someone well on the way to recovery (from a fall), both physically and in terms of confidence and optimism.”

We also encourage feedback between residents. One of the ways we do this is through Compliment Sessions, a time for exchanging praise for one another. One of our residents said, “When I’m feeling low, there is always a smiling face to pick me up,” and we think that’s a perfect summary of Birchwood House! Sharing these moments of connection is so helpful in fostering a sense of belonging and reminding our residents of the dedicated community around them.

What have loved ones said?

Care at Birchwood House goes beyond our residents, and we’re so lucky to have developed truly positive relationships with family members and loved ones. We all work as a team to ensure residents have a living environment that truly supports their wellbeing. Whilst we provide day-to-day care, family members are invaluable in bringing personal insight.

Recent reviews:

Here are some examples of recent reviews from family members, received in March 2026:

  • “Birchwood House is a unique jewel tucked away in the heart of the Kent Countryside and, with its caring staff and positive attitude, has proved to be the ideal ‘family’ setting for our brother” – A.H (Sister of Resident)
  • “My mum was very anxious about going into a care home, but Clare and the team have done a wonderful job making her feel at home and getting her involved in activities. It’s so nice to see her engaging with other people her age instead of sitting at home with her carer waiting for visitors” – D.W (Son of Resident)
  • “My mother has lived at Birchwood for over four and a half years and our experience has been very positive. Her needs have been met at all times and she has made invaluable relationships with carers who have supported her emotionally and made her feel at home” – I.G (Daughter of Resident)
  • The team go above and beyond to ensure that residents feel comfortable, safe, and valued. My mother is always treated with dignity, and it’s clear that the staff take the time to get to know each resident personally – their preferences, routines, and what makes them happy” – S.D (Daughter of Resident)

All of our reviews are independently given. They are taken from CareHome.co.uk, and we’re so proud to currently hold a review score of 9.9 out of 10. To see more reviews, or to submit one yourself, please see here.

As always, we’re incredibly grateful to our residents and their loved ones for their voice and participation when it comes to feedback. We can all learn something from the people around us, and our residents are constantly teaching us just as much as we teach them!
